Scandifornian: Modern & Cozy Home Design

Polar Night may be one of the most intriguing examples of nature’s power. As winter sets in, the northernmost regions of Scandinavia are blanketed by a period of extended nightfall – some experiencing little more than twilight for months on end. However, the people in these communities continue to find a spirit of light, warmth, and coziness throughout this season of darkness. For many, this ethos is rooted in their deep cultural connection to nature and daily rituals of spending time outdoors. However, this connection to the natural world goes far beyond simply stepping outside. Its influence is evident in many aspects of Scandinavian life, most notably within the home.

Scandinavian principles have shaped many forms of home design creating a style that is simplistic yet comfortable. For example, many hallmarks of Scandinavian design are present in California Modernism, another aesthetic inspired by an affinity for life outdoors.

The Scandifornian design profile offers the best of both influences. Clean lines and simplistic shapes are met by organic materials and a warm, neutral color palette. The Scandifornian home feels modern yet cozy, intentionally edited and also wildly free as the boundaries of home converge with nature. It’s a style that transcends the passage of trends while remaining distinctly current.

As you develop your unique life of beauty, we invite you to explore Scandifornian home design as our offer of inspiration.

Natural Materials

Wood, stone, and organic fibers emphasize the connection to the outdoors that is central to Scandifornian design. Even as finished products, these elements remind us of the untamed rhythms found within the natural world. Balancing the rich textures and patterns inherent to these materials is essential to maintaining the calm simplicity of Scandifornian design. Pair larger sweeping patterns like plain sawn wood with materials that offer finer details like limestone or granite.

Wood-Mode Vanguard Plus doors in Rough Sawn Euro Oak Veneer are complemented with elements of natural stone and an earthy palette in this bath designed by The Kitchen Source.

Modern Simplicity

Clean lines, symmetrical arrangements, and open space create a feeling of ease and harmony within Scandifornian design. Unfilled space is often overlooked as a design element, but it can be just as important as the décor and furnishings within the room. We often create these moments of visual rest by reserving extra space around furnishings or by minimizing artwork. However, it is also important to ensure each item selected for the space also features a streamlined design profile. For example, cabinet doors with minimal definition, smooth profiles, and a full overlay create a continuous flow that brings attention to fine details while remaining streamlined and uncluttered.

Sierra Custom Kitchens, Baths & Design used Wood-Mode Vanguard Plus Matte Foundry finish on rough sawn euro oak veneer to establish this sleek, modern aesthetic.

Layered Lighting

Light holds a powerful connection to ambience, impacting the way we perceive and feel within a space. Combining natural, ambient, and accent light sources creates a visually dynamic environment that closely replicates nature’s cadence. Large, uncovered windows provide an inlet for natural light to fill the room, adding a brightness and vibrancy that awakens the mind. Conversely, warmer accent lighting placed at or slightly above eye level mimics the transition to sunset creating a feeling of coziness while preparing the mind for rest.

Unfiltered natural light is combined with modern overhead fixtures creating a cozy yet streamlined aesthetic in this Connecticut home designed by Shore and Country Kitchens.

Warm Textures

Organic materials like wool, linen, leather, and cork add warm texture and depth to the simplicity of Scandifornian design. Against the smoothness of wood and stone, these tactile elements invoke a feeling of comfort. Maintain a neutral color palette to enhance the simplicity of Scandifornian design or weave in slight pops of color to provide added character.
